So what exactly distinguishes Four-Wheel drive (4WD) from All-Wheel Drive (AWD)? And Which one is superior? Is AWD equivalent to 4WD?

Although AWD and 4WD are comparable, there are a few significant differences that you should be aware of if you truly wish to drive informed. What is All-Wheel Drive (AWD)? 

All-Wheel Drive also referred to as AWD, is a system that allows each of the four wheels to acquire traction on its own. AWD and 4WD are different in the sense that 4WD can be toggled on and off, whereas AWD is generally always on. 

What is Four-Wheel Drive (4x4)?

Four-wheel drive, usually known as 4WD, is a system in which the engine drives all four wheels equally. This kind of system is generally found on a pickup truck since it works well for heavy-duty hauling and other job tasks.
