Spring has Sprung: When should I swap my Winter Tires?

Spring has officially arrived, and a question that often pops into any vehicle owner's mind is if the emergence of spring signifies that it's time to swap out the winter tires.

Being that spring is a transitional season, where winter-like conditions and cooler temperatures can continue into April (and even May in certain cases), it's always a smart idea to find out when the optimal time to swap your tires would be.

We're sharing when the perfect time is to make the swap...

TEMPERATURE TRUMPS CALENDAR DATE

Whenever temperatures climb to 7 degrees Celsius or higher, and remain at that temperature for a consistent amount of time, it's safe to make the swap.

Although Spring weather is notorious for its unpredictability, with higher temperatures throughout the day that drop to zero or below at night, there is a lot of debate over whether it's better to keep the winter tires on or swap them out.

Because of these rapidly fluctuating temperatures, the worst thing that can happen is leaving winter tires on for an extended time. This is not the most detrimental situation because leaving them on for too long will only cause the rubber to deteriorate at a faster rate, but it won't impair the traction of the tires.

SWAPPING WINTER TIRES TOO EARLY CAN BE RISKY BUSINESS

On the contrary, the worst and often most dangerous thing about swapping out your winter tires too early is the possibility of snowfall on the ground or decreasing temperatures after the switch.

This is where the location in which you live plays a huge role in your decision to swap over your tires. You should always try to factor in the type of climate your particular area is subjected to to determine when the best time to switch would be.
